GUITAR LESSONS: Dadgad..Open Tunings..Slide Guitar... (Los Angeles)

31 July 2010, 12:12 am

GUITAR LESSONS: Dadgad & Open Tunings This is a popular open tuning used globally in many guitar genres, and yields fresh and imaginative alternatives to Standard Tuning. Dadgad is an excellent tuning for fingerstyle, strumming, slide, tapping, and harp-like sequencing of scales, modes, and motifs, and much more. I have a clear system which aids in demystifying this tuning and creating strategies in which to explore its altered fingerboard matrix. To many, Dadgad is the Standard Tuning of Open Tunings. I have been playing, composing, recording, and teaching in this tuning for more than 25 years. Dadgad is a strategic tuning for slide guitar as well. I have been playing slide both in Eastern and Western systems for over 35 years. If you are interested in the exploration of Dadgad or Open Tunings for the purpose of composition and/or improvisation; as well as a sophisitcated approach to slide guitar that emphasizes tone, intonation, articulation, and vibe, please contact me. I'd be happy to share any of this with you. A select Dadgad overview follows. Peace <^> __________________________________________________ Part One | Dadgad is a suspended 4th tuning: 1 5 1 4 5 1. Standard tuning has 3 keys which use all the open strings: ..C Major ..G Major & ..D Major; 2 keys that use 5 of the open strings: A Major & F Major; and 1 key that uses 4 of the open strings: E Major. Dadgad has 5 keys that use all the open strings:..Bb Major ..F Major ..C Major ..G Major & ..D Major; 1 key that uses 5 of the open strings: A major; and 1 key that uses 4 of the open strings: Eb Major. The 3 D's in the tuning and 2 A's produce strong harmonic overtones. As Dadgad has 7 adjacent Keys from Eb Major to A major [following the musical curve of the Circle of 5ths] with so many open strings, it therefore becomes an excellent choice for the consideration of [but not limited to] 7 D tonal centers, their modal perspectives, the keys from which they are derived, and the other rotations (modes) of those keys. Consider the D tonal center modes below. All the D modes are rotated except for 1> D Ionian or the D major scale: D E F# G A B C# D. Otherwise with the other modes, there is displayed the key from which the mode is derived, as well as its corresponding rotation. ________________________________________________ Part Two | 7 Keys
